Because everyone loves making a good list!
Mine is in no particular order. It would be impossible for me to narrow it down to a number one. Maybe I’ll find one someday… well, I’m thinking I might extend this to a Top 10 eventually, but I’m having trouble picking the next 5… I will list possible candidates at the bottom.
Urgh, ever since I watched Planetes I realized what a pain these “Favorites” lists are. I never know whether I should go by how often I rewatch it or by how astounded I was when I watched it. For instance, if it was by amount of times I rewatch it because its comforting or whatever, then my list would look like this: Cardcaptor Sakura, Welcome to the NHK, Natsume Yuujinchou, Fancy Lala, Mimi wo Sumaseba (Whisper of the Heart). However, if I were to go by astoundingness/level of masterpiece, it would look more like this: Seirei no Moribito, Gankutsuou, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Planetes, Terra e. I’m leaving my list as a combination of the two for now, but maybe I’ll figure it out sometime in the future after I’ve watched more astounding anime and I’ll rewrite it.
Ah, Saiunkoku. Dear, dear Saiunkoku. I can’t really explain why I like Saiunkoku Monogatari so much. Basically, I really like historical fiction novels. Hmm, wasn’t Saiunkoku adapted from light novels? Why, I believe it was. 😄 But it’s also that while the plot is intricate and intelligent, it’s also addictive and entertaining. Comic relief! I’ve come to think of this as a strange cross between The Twelve Kingdoms, Rose of Versailles, and Fruits Basket. And that pretty much sums it up.
REVOLUTIONARY GIRL UTENA
Mon dieu. How to express my love for Utena? It’s very old school. It seems repetitive at first glance. It’s REALLY WEIRD. And yet… and yet… gahhhh just watch it. Only anime I’ve ever seen to successfully ditch romance and go with friendship. Plus, it’s one of those things that you can watch as a kid and enjoy, and then watch 10 years later and enjoy even more. Awesome characters, music, and shattering everything you believed in. In short, the best thing since – no, actually, it’s BETTER than sliced bread, and I’m not just saying that because I’m snobbish about the quality of my food.
Now let me ask you something. How could I NOT put Gankutsuou on my Top 5 list?! It is overwhelmingly stunning. A brilliant adaption, and quite enjoyable. I loved seeing the story from the point of Albert. Personally, I really liked the animation. Applause for Gonzo, they can do good things sporadically. Everything about Gankutsuou is just awesome and original. It leaves a huge impact once you finish it. Le Comte de Monte Cristo was already an action packed, beloved classic novel, but Gankutsuou took that, put in a blender, threw it into a black hole, and spat it back at you in a new suit. I think while I’m regaling it in compliments here, I will go so far as to say it is a work of art. Okay, that’s enough.
HONEY & CLOVER
Awww Honey and Clover is just so endearing. I love their school. I loved the ending. And I loved how relaxing it was. The music was always really good, too. This is the sort of thing that you can watch over and over. Yes, I am the sad type who does that. I liked all of the characters from the beginning. it. I love Nomiya and Ayu! And you get tired of action and magic and fights and assassinations, right? So Honey & Clover it is!
MICHIKO E HATCHIN
What to say about Michiko e Hatchin? Other than that it’s fantastic… hmm. I’d say that wraps it up, actually. Ahhh, but I do have to mention the excellent and detailed setting and backgrounds, and the full and amazing cast of characters, and the way it seems to be very random yet so carefully done. Applause for Manglobe! They ARE awesome… I could watch this forever. Michiko and Hatchin are truly an excellent duo.
Rose of Versailles – I just have to put this up here even though I just finished it the other day because I cried like 10 series worth over it. Thus it deserves an honorable mention for making me cry.
Cardcaptor Sakura – Seriously? This is my LOVE. It is the most comforting thing in the world. It is the equivalent of 10 down comforters, 20 gallons of hot cocoa, feathers, sweaters, scarves and bread. And a kotatsu.
Welcome to the NHK – Ah my newfound love. So entertaining.
Natsume Yuujinchou – …is the new Cardcaptor Sakura. ‘Nuff said.
Alright this is turning into a Top 10 list after all.
